The Anxious Generation is a book by Jonathan Haidt that tries to explain why so many young people today struggle with anxiety, depression, and stress. Haidt believes that the world has changed quickly, especially because of smartphones and social media, and young people have not had time to get used to it. The book says that these changes have taken away important parts of childhood, like face-to-face friendships and chances to explore the world.
Haidt says that before phones, most kids spent a lot of time playing outside, talking to friends in person, and solving problems on their own. These things helped them grow strong and confident.
But today, many kids spend hours every day looking at screens. They scroll through social media, compare themselves to others, and see stuff that can make them feel sad or left out. Haidt explains that this “phone-based childhood” makes kids more fragile and more likely to feel anxious.
Another point in the book is that parents have become more protective. Many parents worry about safety, so they limit the amount of independence their child has. Haidt also talks about the large increase in mental health issues starting around 2012, the time when smartphones and social media became common for teens. He believes this is not a coincidence.
Overall, The Anxious Generation is a clear and important book. It explains why so many young people struggle today and offers a simple idea to help. Haidt’s message is that childhood should be more about real life, real friends, and real experiences, not just screens. Sounds to me like Camp Voyageur!
