We always have a tremendous staff at Camp Voyageur and 2008 features a crew of CV all-stars. We are a small camp maintaining a ratio of one at least one well trained counselor per four boys. Most of our counselors are trip leaders and besides going through our two week staff training they have current certificates in Wilderness First Aid, CPR and Lifeguard Training. All of our counselors are at least college age and some have graduated.
Here is a quick profile of our 2008 staff:
Johnny Alden | A graduate of Loyola Marymount in California with a degree in film making. He is the mastermind behind many of our stage productions at camp. Currently living in his hometown of Indianapolis, he is working at the Conrad Hotel until camp starts in June. |
Joe Baumann | Joe will join us for a second summer. He is a music education major at University of Wisconsin in River Falls. He plays the french horn, and enjoys sharing his passion for music with others. |
Andy Baumann | Andy has joined us the last several summers as a trip leader and counselor. He co-led the historic expedition on the Albany River in 2007. He attends Minnesota State in Mankato, MN and is pursuing a Registered Nursing degree. |
Darrin Commerford | Darrin will join us as a counselor for the first time this year. He is a film major at MCTC Technical College in the Twin Cities. He is a master of photography and movie making. |
Jack Davidson | will join us for a second year as a counselor and will be the 2008 sailing master and trip leader. He will complete his undergraduate degree from Colby College in Maine this spring with a degree in Theology. |
Suzanne Erdmann | will join us as our girls trip leader. She is a graduate of University of Minnesota Duluth in outdoor education. She is working for Caribou Coffee in Duluth, Minnesota and is enrolled in their management program. |
Tom Greist | Program Director: He co-led the Albany River last summer, and is graduate of Montana State University with a teaching degree in Math and Physics. He’s a first year grad student at University of Kentucky, working towards a degree in Medical Physics. |
Jim Herman | Jim will join us for his third season, though he’s been camping and canoeing in the Boundary Waters for many years. In addition to his in-camp responsibilities he’ll be helping out with coordinating our outfitting groups throughout the season. |
Bernard Hermann | Chef: This will be Chef Bernard’s fifth season with Camp Voyageur. A native of Alsace, he trained in France at the Cordon Bleu. He has lived in the United States and cooked at the Plaza in NYC, in Dallas and Vail, CO before making Ely his home. |
Evan Laurie | Evan will join us for his first year at Voyageur. He attends University of Minnesota Duluth and is an art education major. He will head up our arts and crafts program at camp this year. |
David O'Malley | Former camper and CIT, who is finishing his sophomore year at University of Colorado Boulder majoring in Business and Psychology, David will be joining us as a counselor this year. |
Carson Phillips | Carson is a graduate of Sewanee—University of the South. He worked commercial construction in Chicago, and now is taking prerequisite classes at University of Kentucky for attending Medical School. This will be Carson’s fourth summer at Voyageur. |
Henry Rodman | Henry has been a long time camper, dining room setter, dishwasher and now he’ll be a senior camper leader. Henry is a gifted musician and will graduate from high school this year. |
Maxwell Thomas | Maxwell is attending University of Minnesota, Duluth and majoring in outdoor education. He is an experienced outdoorsman and plays many of the sports we offer at camp. |
Dr. James Tuohy | is a retiring Twin Cities Radiologist who will join us all summer.He plans to teach middle school science in the fall. Having a camp doctor as our health care professional is a CV first! |
Matt Zalecki | Matt will join us as an intern. He is an Outdoor Recreation major at the University of Toledo. |
Owen Zidar | , a Camp Voyageur veteran camper and staff will graduate from Dartmouth College in June with a degree in Economics. After camp he’ll move to Boston and work for Bain Capital Ventures. |
