Cabin Life

Some of your best friends will bunk with you in the cabin. Boys of the same age live in rustic, screened cabins with canvas flaps and sleep in bunk beds. A cabin will typically house six or seven campers with two counselors. A cabin group prepares daily for inspection together after breakfast. A rest period following lunch gives campers time to relax, write a letter home, play cards and prepare for trips or cabin skits. The rest of the day campers are out of the cabin playing with boys of all ages on the athletic fields or on the water. Boys keep their clothes in a trunk or suitcase and laundry is sent out weekly when we change bed sheets.

After sharing a cabin or a canoe for a month, you go home with lots of memories and good friends. At Camp Voyageur we play sports all day long. A refreshing dip in Farm Lake follows each soccer, frisbee, hoops and paddleball game. Sports whip campers into shape for the rigors of canoeing, portaging and hiking trips. Free time means swimming, fishing, recreation and hanging out with friends. In the evening campers entertain one another, play games in the mess hall or gather around the fire circle for tall tales. Hearty family-style meals cooked up in the mess hall welcome campers returning from the trail. A large hall provides shelter and recreation when it rains.

Campers review camping and canoeing skills the first few days of each session. Besides enjoying land and water sports, campers take day trips fishing, hiking, to iron ore mines and to the International Wolf Center. The last two days of each session campers compete in the CV Olympics. Campers earn their name on plaques in the mess hall by catching the largest fish, swimming to islands or skippering a sailboat. As a sinking sun splashes orange across the sky, we gather at the fire circle for tall tales and songs. Bring your favorite musical instrument hobbies and talents to share.
